Accelerating and reinforcing the response to the emergence of new respiratory viruses.
A network of virology laboratories using the same technique for rapid, robust and comparable results

With the aim of strengthening our preparedness and responsiveness in the event of a new viral emergence and in the framework of the Discovery trial, part of the European project, EU-RESPONSE, was created VIRvOLT which stands for Virology Operational Laboratories for drug Testing. Developed by the CNR (National Reference Centre for viruses of respiratory infections) of the Hospices Civils de Lyon (HCL-France), in partnership with bioMérieux, VIRvOLT – now at the disposal of the European project PROACT EU-RESPONSE – is a crisis preparedness tool that complements the clinical network with on-site virology laboratories.

The laboratories of VIRvOLT can quickly measure normalized viral loads in respiratory samples and provide comparable results regardless of the molecular platform used. Thanks to VIRvOLT and our continuous work to harmonize techniques, we can assess the viral efficacy of tested treatments at any given time for intermediate or final outcomes.

Eleven European virology laboratories have successfully completed the validation process and joined VIRvOLT. They perform an External Quality Assessment and participate in a working group once a year. This network aims to integrate new partners and is currently in contact with laboratories in Ireland, Norway and Italy.
